Two No Man’s Sky players met but couldn’t see each other because of server problems

No Man’s Sky is a weird beast. It’s the kind of game that’s online, but you might never realize it, depending on how you play. It doesn’t even require a PlayStation Plus subscription. If you’ve been playing the last couple days, you might’ve noticed a note on the pause screen telling you you’ve lost connection to the server. Because, you know, everyone is playing it.

Two streamers found each each other last night when one stumbled across the other’s named planet and looked up its discoverer online. The two hopped online, on streams, and went to the same spot on the same planet, only to find out they couldn’t see each other. It was initially assumed that this meant the game isn’t as online as it might’ve been promised. No Man’s Sky is a huge and, again, weird game. Gamers are looking for disappointment around every corner. Now it’s starting to look like those users might not have had a reliable connection.

Here’s No Man’s Sky lead Sean Murray telling us that everything is fine:

He added later that “it is a testament to how amazing our network coders are that Discoveries are still working at all,” suggesting further that online features are severely hampered.

Murray said on Twitter that his team has added a ‘Scan for other players’ in the Galactic Map to encourage meet-ups, as rare as he thinks they’ll be, and that Hello Games wants players to be aware they’re in a shared universe.

“We added online features and some Easter Eggs to create cool moments,” he said. “We hope to see those happening… but too many of you are playing right now. More than we could have predicted.”

So everyone, turn off your PlayStation consoles. Log out of the most hotly anticipated game of the generation and one of the most hyped games of all time. Let Murray and his team get their fire extinguishers out.

What’s wild is that the game isn’t even out on PC yet. No Man’s Sky releases for PC on August 12.
