• Apple patent app shows next-gen heart-tracking wearable

Earlier this week, we learned Apple might be working on a “killer” health device set to launch next year. Now a new patent application may reveal what the company is cooking up.

Cupertino’s latest application for a patent details a wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) that you can wear anywhere on your body to monitor the electrical activity of your heart. The device would be able to recognize where it is in relation to your heart and then recalibrate to provide accurate data. Apple also notes that it could be fashioned into various shapes, including a watch, ring, pendant or brooch to match any outfit or activity.

The company is expected to launch a new Apple Watch or two later this year, but the smartwatch probably won’t push too far into the health market. Apple has previously said it doesn’t want the device to get bogged down in a lengthy FDA approval process. Instead, the company could pack its more advanced medical technology into a separate product like the one listed in this filing, though there’s no guarantee this futuristic ECG will ever see the light of day.
