Mercedes-Benz, last year, announced an ambitious plan to change its whole naming convention and will now align its models to a single letter preceded by two letters conveying the body style. The letters are C, E, S which are basically their most well-known vehicles in their lineup and all other models will follow in this convention. We in India too will get vehicles based on this new nomenclature and the first vehicle to follow suit will be a facelifted version of the GL-Class which will now be known as the GLS s it will be the SUV of the S-Class range. It gets cosmetic updates both internally and externally but is likely to stay the same mechanically.

    Exterior
The Mercedes-Benz GLS retains the overall shape as the current GL but gets new front and rear bumpers in addition to some new colour options. Spy shots also reveal that one variant of the car is likely to have LED headlights while the lower spec models will get bi-xenon projector lamps.

    Interior
Like the overall exterior design, we expect more updates than changes to the design of the cabin. The layout of the elements will remain the same but expect a new steering wheel, updated COMAND system, rear entertainment package as standard and things like ambient cabin light options.

    Engine and gearbox
While the GLS globally will be offered with five engine options, the India-spec GLS will continue to be offered with the 3.0-litre V6 diesel which produces 258bhp and 619Nm of torque. It gets a seven-speed AT and 4MATIC AWD system. The standard GLS will be followed by the GLS63 AMG which will make use of the 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 that produces 550bhp and is mated to the 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission.
    Price and competition
We expect a minimal price change from the current model. It competes with the Audi Q7 in the Indian market.
