    Mercedes-Benz GLC Preview

Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off the production version of the GLC globally in mid-2015. This new SUV model, in essence, is the latest generation of the GLK-Class but gets the GLC name thanks to its close association with the C-Class, as per Mercedes’ new naming and model convention. Mercedes unveiled the GLC 300 at the Auto Expo held in Greater Noida for the Indian market and will be a part of its launch schedule in India for 2016.

    Exterior
Styling wise, the GLC follows Mercedes' latest design theme and a result, the front end is reminiscent of quite a few models from the German carmaker’s existing range. Up front, the GLC looks similar to the entry-level GLA as it shares many of the external lines, curves and the avant-garde grille. The side profile, meanwhile, appears like the old GLK but expectedly is a lot more contemporary, thanks to the curvy profile and flared wheel arches. Again, the rear profile takes a lot of influence from the smaller GLA but brings a few new design elements to the table in the form of the wider taillights and a new tailgate.
    Interior
The interior looks thoroughly modern and stylish and is complete with a lot of bits taken off the C-Class and a few other Mercedes models. The AMG GT-like centre console is expected to be finished in gloss wood and will hold a lot of in-car entertainment functions. In terms of features, Mercedes will offer climate control, sunroof, a comprehensive driver interface, airbags, cruise control, reversing camera, powered front seats and the latest version of Merc’s COMAND infotainment system.

    Engine and Gearbox
Globally, the GLC is being offered with two diesel and two petrol engines. The former is available in two units - a GLC 220 d and GLC 250 d which produces 166bhp/400Nm and 200bhp/500Nm respectively. The petrol is the GLC 250 which produces 208bhp/350Nm and the GLC 300 with the same engine but producing 241bhp of power. All these engines will only be offered with the 9G-Tronic DCT gearbox as well as the 4MATIC AWD system. The Indian market is expected to get the GLC 300 and the GLC 250d.
    Competition
When launched, it will be slotted between the GLA and the GLE and will compete with similarly sized models from Audi, BMW and Volvo. It will be a BMW X3 and Audi Q5 challenger while also taking on the Volvo XC60 and the Land Rovers – the Discovery Sport and the Evoque. We expect Mercedes to price it around Rs 45 lakh to Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi)
