• Facebook Invites Conservatives to HQ to Talk Trending Topics

A gathering of some prominent conservatives is being held this coming Wednesday. Though that, on its face, is likely not cause for news, the location of where this somewhat-secret group of people is meeting is fairly intriguing: Facebook.

The news of the invite comes straight from Glenn Beck who, along with others, has been invited to Facebook to partake in a little summit of-sorts. All this centers around the recent reports that Facebook was allegedly silencing conservative viewpoints within its Trending Topics spot on users' home pages—an allegation Facebook denies.

"I was contacted by Mark Zuckerberg's office this morning about going out to see him in Menlo Park Wednesday. They have had the same problem that many in media and Silicon Valley face: suppression of conservative voices and ideas. Many voices and posts were deleted or insured to never trend according to a report. Ted Cruz, CPAC, The Blaze and I were specifically named. Mark wanted to meet with 8 or ten of us to explain what happened and assure us that it won't happen again," Beck wrote in a Facebook post (of all things).

"How does a company who allowed voices to be heard in Iran and Egypt which sparked revolution silence voices of anyone here? I am trying to rearrange my schedule to see if I can make it. It would be interesting to look him in the eye as he explains and a win for all voices if we can come to a place of real trust with this powerful tool."

Reports that Facebook was allegedly keeping conservative viewpoints from its Trending Topics tool surfaced when a number of Facebook's former curators for the spot told Gizmodo (anonymously) that they were told to "inject" stories into the Trending Topics section even if they weren't actually all that popular. As well, some curators seemed to avoid publishing trending conservative-themed news, even if it was as popular (or more so) than Facebook's other trending news. In some cases, curators would go find the same news from what they considered a more neutral source instead of linking to a site like, say, Breitbart.

Zuckerberg addressed these allegations of bias in a Facebook post last week.

On May 3, Gizmodo first published a report offering an insight into how the trending section on Facebook works. The report says, it was managed by a bunch of former journalists, all in their 20s and 30s, who were deciding what would trend on the website. Trending is an important section for Facebook, which has recently become a mainstream platform for news source and sharing, both for readers and publishers. - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-technology/facebook-trending-topics-controversy-heres-what-has-happened-so-far-2803156/#sthash.We0LEx2U.dpuf
